Music Program

“There should be music in the child’s environment.  The child learning should be considered, and music should always be provided” – Maria Montessori

Montessori Music Toddlers

Music is an integral part of the Montessori classroom.  Music enables children to gain enriched vocabulary and to express themselves non-verbally.  Children enjoy music and movement evidenced by their pure joy.  But that’s not all!  Music enhances Math skills, literacy, and overall brain development.  Music even improves academic performance!

In addition to the classroom music materials that are taught by classroom teachers, we employ a full-time music director to work with students aged three and older.  The music director spends time in each classroom on a daily basis working with both the entire class and individuals.  These lessons include both ear and vocal training as well as music appreciation for all styles of music.  Our oldest students learn to play recorders and the ukulele.

Each year we produce three music performances on stage.  These performances include a Harvest Festival in October, a holiday performance in December, and a final celebration performance in June.  Beginning with the kindergarten class, our students have featured singing and speaking roles on stage.  These opportunities lead to a comfort level when speaking or performing in public, something that many of us are not comfortable facing.  Our belief is that positive childhood experiences lay the foundation for positive adult experiences.
