Montessori Stepping Stones Frequently Asked Questions

What is Montessori?

The Montessori method of education was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori where hands on learning and independence in caring communities is paramount. She recognized that children need to be able to take ownership of their learning in a safe, student-centered environment. Montessori teaching methods recognize that not all children learn the same way or at the same time;. Each child is valued as a unique individual.

What ages and/or grades does Montessori Stepping Stones serve?

Our authentic Montessori program individually guides our children from six weeks through 8th grade.

Is it ever too late to start Montessori?

No, it is never too late. It is most important is that we match the values and beliefs of each particular family.

Do Montessori teachers follow a curriculum?

Yes! All our lead teachers at Montessori Stepping Stones are Montessori certified and adhere to an authentic Montessori curriculum. This curriculum includes mathematics, language, science, geography, history, and culture. Our teachers “follow the child” to ensure they understand the material, providing additional instruction as needed. They are constant observers, ensuring each child engages with the material and presenting more challenging work when the child is ready.

Will my child have homework?

We believe in maintaining a healthy balance between school and family life. Instead of traditional homework, we encourage activities like reading books, playing outside, and spending quality time with family.

Can Montessori students do whatever they want?

No, while Montessori encourages independence, there is “freedom within limits.” Our teachers continually observe and present materials that spark a child’s interest, but the child is expected to follow through with practicing these materials to progress to the next lesson. Teachers gently guide children to ensure they are engaging with the materials effectively.
