During the elementary years, something remarkable happens in a child’s mind. Young children who once asked endless “what” questions begin to ask “why.” Why do things work the way they do?
-
Why does history unfold the way it does?
-
Why do numbers behave the way they do?
At Montessori Stepping Stones, our private elementary school in Macomb County is designed specifically for this stage of development. Located near downtown Mount Clemens, our program serves students in grades 1–6, divided into lower elementary (ages 6–9) and upper elementary (ages 9–12) multi-age classrooms.
The Journey from Concrete to Abstract
In a traditional classroom, every child is expected to move through material at the same speed. But children naturally develop at different rates. At Montessori Stepping Stones:
-
Students move forward only when they demonstrate mastery.
-
Teachers provide personalized lessons based on each child’s readiness.
-
Students receive support when needed and advanced challenges when they are ready.
This approach builds confidence. Children experience the satisfaction of mastering concepts through their own effort, seeing themselves as capable, independent learners.
Mixed-Age Classrooms That Build Leadership
Our structure mirrors how learning naturally happens in life. By grouping students in multi-age communities (6–9 and 9–12), we foster:
-
Collaboration & Empathy: Younger students learn by observing older peers.
-
Mentorship: Older students deepen their own understanding by guiding younger classmates.
-
Confidence: Leadership skills are developed naturally as students progress through the three-year cycle.
Cultivating Independence and Responsibility
Montessori classrooms are “prepared environments” that encourage students to take ownership of their learning. Our elementary students learn how to:
-
Manage their time and organize their work.
-
Set personal goals and solve problems independently.
-
Collaborate effectively with peers.
By the time our students reach upper elementary, they demonstrate remarkable self-motivation – a habit that prepares them for lifelong success.
Spanish as an Active Language Study
The journey from concrete to abstract is reflected in our Elementary Spanish program. While early childhood focuses on exposure, elementary students begin active study through:
-
Daily small group work.
-
Building complex, relevant vocabulary.
-
Practicing conversational Spanish and understanding language structure.
Educating the Whole Child
A Montessori education focuses on holistic development. Beyond academics, we support:
-
Social & Emotional Growth: Conflict resolution and self-awareness.
-
Physical & Creative Exploration: Coordination and meaningful artistic pursuits.
Our educators create a classroom culture that values curiosity, respect, and collaboration.
Ready to See the Montessori Difference?
The best way to understand how we transform curiosity into deep understanding is to see our classrooms in action.
