“The greatness of the human personality begins at the hour of birth.” Maria Montessori
Our authentic Montessori curriculum starts in infancy, when each child’s natural curiosity begins to unfold. From the first days of life, children are absorbing everything around them. The Montessori Infant-Toddler Curriculum nurtures this early development through a calm and carefully prepared environment, allowing every child to grow in independence, confidence, and joy.
The Absorbent Mind
In the first three years of life, the brain develops more rapidly than at any other time. Dr. Montessori called this stage the period of the absorbent mind, a time when children effortlessly take in impressions from their surroundings. The infant-toddler classroom is intentionally designed to support this development with calm, orderly spaces that invite movement, exploration, and repetition.
Areas of the Infant-Toddler Curriculum
1. Practical Life
Have you noticed your toddler mimicking your behavior, wiping the table after you, stirring an empty bowl, or pretending to sweep? These moments are more than imitation; they are practice for real life. Through daily activities such as washing hands, preparing a snack, watering plants, or putting on shoes, toddlers learn coordination, concentration, and independence. Every task is meaningful, helping the child feel capable and connected to their community.
2. Language Development
Language grows through rich conversation, songs, and stories. Teachers speak slowly, clearly, and respectfully, naming objects and actions to expand vocabulary. Books are simple, realistic, and introduced with intention to foster a love of language and communication. Montessori environments are rooted in reality. You will notice natural materials, real images, and practical tasks, but you will not find cartoon characters or fantasy themes. Children learn best when their world reflects what is true and familiar to them.
3. Movement and Coordination
Freedom of movement is essential to development. Children are never confined unnecessarily but are encouraged to crawl, walk, climb, and explore safely. Each movement builds strength, balance, and confidence, preparing the child’s body for more complex tasks.
4. Sensorial Exploration
Young children learn through their senses by touching, tasting, smelling, and listening. Montessori materials engage these senses with real, natural objects and purposeful activities. A soft brush, smooth stone, or wooden rattle helps refine perception and awareness.
5. Care of Self and the Environment
Even the youngest child is capable of participating in daily routines. By dressing themselves, wiping a spill, or helping set the table, children learn responsibility and develop pride in caring for their surroundings.
6. Time Outdoors and Connection to Nature
Outdoor time is an essential part of the Montessori infant-toddler experience. Nature offers endless opportunities for discovery and calm. Children might feel the texture of tree bark, watch the movement of clouds, or listen to the rustling of leaves. These experiences awaken the senses about the natural world. Being outdoors also supports gross motor development and allows children to explore at their own pace. The environment becomes another classroom, filled with opportunities to move, observe, and connect.
7. The Role of the Teacher or Guide
In a Montessori infant-toddler environment, the teacher or guide acts as a gentle observer and facilitator. They prepare materials, model respectful interactions, and step in only when needed. This respect for the child’s pace fosters trust and self-confidence. The teacher’s calm presence creates an atmosphere of security where children thrive.
8. A Peaceful Beginning
The Montessori Infant-Toddler Curriculum is not about rushing milestones. It is about nurturing the whole child: body, mind, and spirit. By offering opportunities for independence and discovery in a loving, prepared environment, we give children the best possible start in life.
We also offer a Half-Day Toddler Program!
At Montessori Stepping Stones we believe these early years lay the foundation for all future learning. Every moment, whether pouring water, listening to music, or putting on shoes, is an opportunity to grow.
