10 Ways to Prepare for Your Child’s First Day of a Montessori Preschool

The first day of school is a big step for children and families. In many Montessori schools the preschool is called “primary” and has children from ages 3-6. With some preparation, you can help your child feel calm and excited to step into this new chapter.

  1. Talk About the Classroom as “Their Place”

Explain that the classroom belongs to the children. It is a space designed just for them, where everything is set up at their level. Share that they will have the chance to choose work, move freely, and make new friends.

  1. Visit Before the First Day

Make sure your child can visit the school. They should walk through the classroom, meet a few teachers, and see the playground. This will help build the excitement for the new school year.

  1. Practice Independence at Home

Encourage small tasks that build self-reliance such as putting on a coat, putting on shoes, and opening up their lunch box. These everyday skills mirror the practical life work they will do in the classroom and give them confidence.

  1. Establish a Peaceful Morning Routine

Montessori values order. Begin practicing a calm morning routine before school starts. Wake up with enough time so there is no rush, share breakfast together, and allow your child to dress themselves if they are able.

  1. Choose Clothes for Independence

Pick simple clothing that your child can manage on their own, especially in the bathroom. Elastic waistbands, Velcro shoes, and easy zippers allow children to feel capable.

  1. Encourage Care of Belongings

Have your child pack their backpack. They should have extra set of clothes in case of accidents or spills. They should know where each item is in their backpack.

  1. Limit Screens and Overstimulation the Night Before

Give your child a peaceful evening leading into the first day. A simple dinner, outdoor play, a bath, and a favorite story set the stage for restful sleep and a calm start.

  1. Keep Goodbyes Simple

Montessori teachers encourage quick, warm goodbyes. A short hug, a confident smile, and a cheerful farewell communicates trust. Your child will pick up on your confidence and settle more easily into the classroom.

  1. Trust the Process

It can be hard to let go, especially on the first day. Remember that Montessori guides are trained to support children through transitions. By trusting the teachers and the environment, you model confidence for your child.

  1. Reflect and Celebrate Together

At the end of the day, give your child time to share at their own pace. Instead of asking a long list of questions, try simple prompts like “What work did you enjoy?” or “Who did you meet today?”
