Montessori 101: Grace and Courtesy in Upper Elementary

In Montessori classrooms, academic learning is only part of a child’s development. Just as important is learning how to live and work respectfully within a community. Dr. Maria Montessori called these lessons Grace and Courtesy.

For upper elementary students in grades 4–6 at Montessori Stepping Stones, Grace and Courtesy is not taught through lectures or rules posted on a wall. Instead, it is practiced through real experiences that allow students to develop confidence, empathy, and social awareness.

One of our favorite ways to practice these skills is through a monthly tradition called “Fancy Friday”.

What is Fancy Friday?

Once a month, our upper elementary students host a special international meal together.

Each month the class studies a different country. Students learn about its culture, traditions, geography, and food. Then they plan and prepare a meal inspired by that country.

The students themselves take responsibility for every part of the experience:

  • researching recipes
  • preparing the food
  • setting the table
  • decorating the space
  • welcoming guests
  • serving the meal
  • practicing table manners
  • cleaning the kitchen afterward

By the end of the day, students have not only shared a meal but also practiced the social skills that make communities function.

Grace and Courtesy in Action

Fancy Friday provides a natural setting for students to practice important social skills for example:

  • greeting guests politely
  • introducing themselves
  • serving others before themselves
  • using respectful table conversation
  • expressing gratitude for food and effort
  • taking responsibility for shared spaces

These are not small lessons. They are life skills that help children become thoughtful and capable members of society.

Montessori classrooms intentionally give children opportunities to practice real responsibility. When students prepare and host a meal together, they learn that their actions affect everyone around them.

A Taste of China

Last month’s Fancy Friday took our students to China.

After learning about Chinese culture and cuisine, the class worked together to prepare an impressive menu that included:

  • chow mein
  • potstickers
  • bao
  • green onion pancakes
  • mango pudding
  • shrimp chips

Students divided the work among cooking teams, carefully following recipes and learning new techniques along the way. Some focused on preparing dough and fillings, while others worked on desserts or table presentation.

The classroom was transformed into a welcoming dining space with decorations inspired by Chinese culture. Students practiced hosting their guests with pride and attention to detail.

Why Experiences Like This Matter

Upper elementary students are entering a developmental stage where social awareness becomes very important. They want to understand how to interact with others and how they fit within a larger community.

Purposeful traditions like Fancy Friday provide a natural setting for students to practice and master these critical social skills.

Experiences like Fancy Friday help students develop:

  • confidence in social settings
  • respect for different cultures
  • collaboration and teamwork
  • responsibility for shared work
  • pride in contributing to a community experience

These moments also create powerful memories. Students remember the laughter in the kitchen, the challenge of mastering a new recipe, and the satisfaction of sitting down together to enjoy the meal they prepared.

Preparing Students for Life

Grace and Courtesy lessons help students grow into individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also kind, respectful, and socially capable.

By cooking together, hosting one another, and sharing meals from around the world, students learn that education is not only about academics. It is also about understanding people, cultures, and community.

For our upper elementary students, Fancy Friday is one of the most delicious lessons of the month.
